The project

This tool is a collaborative project by the International Planned Parenthood Federation Western Hemisphere Region and the Sexual Rights Initiative. It aims to facilitate access for advocates and delegates to UN intergovernmental resolutions, expert guidance, and technical information in order to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights at the global level and hold governments accountable for their international obligations and commitments.

The tool includes two sections:

  1. A searchable database of adopted intergovernmental documents and of expert guidance related to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  2. A curated list of key sexual and reproductive health and rights terms with selected examples of agreed language and additional guidance, definitions and resources.

We have been working on the UN Advocacy Tool since 2013, it is one of our first projects as a company and a great example of how a website is alive and evolving.

When the first version of the tool was developed it only showed terms, it was closed to the public and in English alone. Since then, we have improved the tool to hold several languages, add a powerful database and search engine, and also include regional resolutions and documents.

The look of the tool has also evolved with it. Below you can find screenshots of how it looked in its previous version.

This is a screenshot of the first version of the tool.

Latest Rebuilt

The latest rebuilt of the tool included migrating from Drupal to Laravel. The tool had grown a lot since the first version so a clean slate and better systems architecture was needed.

Before the rebuilt we developed user stories and redefined the audiences and goals, so we could satisfied the users with the results. We also included a testing phase with real users.

To ease the data entry process and update of the content, we are using Airtable, which then connects through an API with Laravel Nova. Terms are built on Laravel Nova directly and everything gets exported from there to the public version of the website.
