Mission Blue - Sylvia Earle Alliance

While around the world twelve percent of the earth has some form of protection, less than six percent of the ocean is protected. Mission Blue is responsible for raising public awareness of the problems facing the oceans, through ocean expeditions and communication campaigns such as the 2014 Netflix documentary. All this in order to unite organizations and communities around the world, for the access and support of a worldwide network of marine protected areas, Hope Spots, that are vital places to restore the health of the ocean. Dr. Sylvia Earle introduced the concept in her 2009 TED talk.

Why did I choose them for the monthly donation?

There is much we don't know about the ocean, and many times we do not think about how important it is in our daily life, remember that most of the oxygen we breathe is generated there. Worse still is not knowing the impact our activities have: oil spills, dumping toxic waste into them, and overfishing are some serious examples of what happens every day. That is why it is vitally important to support organizations like Mission Blue, which work to restore and protect the health of the oceans; and it reminds us that a healthy ocean benefits us all, regardless of our geographical location. Dr. Sylvia Earle steers this great organization, she was named “planet hero” by Times magazine in 1998 and was recognized with the Princess of Asturias Award in 2018, she is an example of leadership and inspiration for everyone.
